The timeline of our family

Below is a listing of important events that have shaped the history of the Bafokeng ba ha Tsele. This time-line spins as far back as the 1910's to the present day.

Prior to 1910

  • This is the period, in the history of our family, that took place in Lesotho (the country that is at the heart of South Africa). It is mostly during this time that our ancestors were colonised by the Europeans. The Europeans took our land and made it theirs, subjecting our fore-fathers and mothers to their evil laws. The Basothos were left with few options, so some decided to come to South Afrika unaware of the fact that Africans in that part of Afrika were also having it tough, as this region had been colonised by the Dutch. Unlike Lesotho, South Afrika had a lot of employment opportunities.

1912

  • Our grandfather, Lesira, was born to Tlaba. His father (Tlaba) and mother lived in Lesotho, in a village called Butha-Buthe, which is where our grandpa grew up.

1914

  • Our grandmother, Kojang, was born. She grew up in Rietz with her family.

1930

  • Ntate-moholo (grandpa) Lesira came to Peterstyn to live with his uncle.

1933-34

  • Grand-pa and ma, Lesira and Kojang, met and married. Our grand-ma got our family name, MmaPakiso at Peterstyn.

1935

  • April 07: A son to Lesira and Kojang was born at Peterstyn. Named Pakiso, after the name given to her mother. Aka Makhoana.

1938

  • April 16: A second son to Lesira and Kojang was born at Peterstyn. Named Rapelehang.
  • August 01: A daughter to Ntoenyane and MmaLipuo was born in Kroonstad, but grew up in Henneman. Named Lipuo after her mother's name.

1941

  • A son to Lesira and Kojang was born at Peterstyn. Named Motoai.

1943

  • A daughter to Lesira and Kojang was born. Named Masello.

1945

  • The family left Peterstyn for Maokeng near Kroonstad. Grandpa went to Johannesburg to seek employment.

1957

  • Pakiso met Lipuo and they started seeing each other.

1958

  • Pakiso and Lipuo were married. Lipuo got our family name, MmaLimakatso.

1959

  • February 29: A son to Pakiso and MmaLimakatso was born. Named Leqosa.

1961

  • February 27: A daughter to Pakiso and MmaLimakatso was born. Named Limakatso after her mother.
  • November 7: A daughter to Rapelehang and Mmasobi was born. Named Mmamokete.

1962

  • Rapelehang and Mmasobi were married. She was given the name MmaTiisetso.

1963

  • A son to Pakiso and MmaLimakatso was born. Named Lesira.

1964

  • Masello got married to Mothobi
  • A daughter to Rapelehang and Mmatiisetso was daughter. Named MmaTokollo. She has passed on.

1965

  • A son to Mmasello and Mothobi was born. Named Pitso.
  • August 18: A son to Rapelehang and Mmatiisetso was born. Named Tlaba.

1966

  • January 24: A son to Pakiso and MmaLimakatso was born. Named Toiso.

1968

  • A son to Pakiso MmaLimakatso was born. He passed on the following day.

1969

  • April 13: A son to Rapelehang and MmaTiisetso was born. Named Khutliso

1970

  • January 25: A son to Pakiso and MmaLimakatso was born. Named Tsokolo.

1972

  • A son to Motoai and MmaPheelo was born. Named Mojalefa.
  • August 24: A son to MaSello and Mothobi was born. Named Lintoe

1973

  • March 07: A son to Pakiso and MmaLimakatso was born. Named Tsele.

1974

  • A daughter to Motoai was born. Named MmaSello. She passed on the same year.

1975

  • January 21: A daughter to MmaSello and Mothobi was born. Named Ntshali.
  • April 25: A daughter to Pakiso and MmaLimakatso was born. Named Mantieheleng.

1976

  • A son to Motoai and MmaPheelo was born. Named Kgabo.

1977

  • Uncle Rapelehang erected a house in Constantia and came to live there with his family.

1980

  • Uncle Motoai went to live with his family in their new house, in Constantia.
  • Leqosa got employed at JCI ( iron and steel making company).
  • Manqelashe went to Harmony mine Hospital, to start her formal training as a nurse.

1981

  • Pakiso came to live with his family in Constantia in September of the same year.

1982

  • Grandma MmaPakiso passed on August 05. She was buried with all the honour she deserved.

1983

  • April 19: A son to MmaMokete, Teboho, was born.
  • Lesira completed his STD 10 senior certificate at Kananelo Secondary School.

1984

  • Toiso completed his STD 10 JMB at Bodibeng High School.

1985

  • September: Lesira formally started his nursing studies (a bridging course) with the MANCOFS-Kroonstad sub-campus.

1986

  • April 07: Grandpa Lesira passes this day. This is coincidentally the same day his eldest son (Pakiso) was born.
  • Tlaba, the son to Rapelehang, passed in July of the same year, as he had been involved in a car accident.
  • November 24: A son to Leqosa, Tokollo , was born.

1987

  • Pakiso finally completed his house, he had started erecting in 1981.

1988

  • Khutliso completed his STD 10 senior certificate with Kananelo Senior Secondary.

1989

  • Tsokolo completed his STD 10 senior certificate with Kananelo Senior Secondary.
  • Lesira and Ntombi got married.
  • Khutliso started his Teachers Diploma with Vista University.
  • Lesira obtained a certificate of enrolment with MANCOFS.

1990

  • Tsokolo started with his Teacher's Diploma with Mphohadi College of Education.
  • Limakatso is married to Shaliane Sello.
  • January 26: A son to Manqelashe and Shaliane Sello, Kotsoane, wa born
  • February 21: A daughter to Lesira and Ntombi, Kojang is born.

1991

  • Khutliso completes his Teacher's Diploma with Vista University.

1992

  • Lesira went to Linoheng Location, to stay with his family. He had also transferred from Orkney Hospital back to Boitumelo Hospital.
  • Tsokolo finishes his Teacher's Diploma with Mphohadi College of Education.
  • Tsele finished his STD 10 senior certificate with Kananelo Senior Secondary.

1993

  • Tsokolo started employment as an educator with the Dept. Of Education at Kananelo Secondary School.
  • sele started his studied at the Vaal Triangle Technikon, studying Analytical Chemistry.
  • November: The wife to Lesira passed, due to a car accident. She left both her husband widowed and her daughter without a mother.

1994

  • April:Toiso got married to Fumane Makape. She was given our family name MmaTsepiso.
  • September 24: A son named Tsepiso, was born to both Toiso and MmaTsepiso.

1995

  • Tsokolo left Kroonstad for Welkom for employment reasons and also to start a new life.

1996

  • September 14: A son named Katleho, was born to MmaKotsoane (Limakatso) and Shaliane Sello.
  • December: Uncle Motoai passed late that year due to an illness.

1997

  • December 29: MmaLimakatso officially retired from working as a domestic worker.
  • Lesira obtained a Diploma in General Nursing from MANCOFS.

1998

  • July: Grandma MmaLipuo passed. She was buried in her home town, Hennenman.
  • December 26: Leqosa passed on. His death is still a mystery to this day.

1999

  • September: Pakiso got into a car accident. He sustained injuries to his left hand and leg.

2000

  • January 05: A daughter to Lesira, Lebohang, was born on this day.

2001

  • May 29: A daughter to Lesira, Kgotsofalo, was born on this day.
  • Lesira started training for Diploma in Theatre Nursing Science.
  • A son to Tsokolo, Lehlohonolo, was born on this day.

2002

  • Pakiso was diagnosed with a minor stroke.
  • June 14: A daughter to Tsokolo,Tumelo-Limakatso, was born on this day.
  • Lesira obtained a Diploma in Surgical and Medical Nursing Science (Theatrical Technique) with Baragwanath College of Nursing-affiliated to Witwatersrand University. He is presently practicing as a specialist in operating room nursing at Boitumelo Hospital.

2004

  • Tsokolo was blessed, as he was chosen to become part of the Leadership Programme sponsored by USAID. The programme took the participants to the United States for three months.

2005

  • August 15: Tsele and MmaThato were blessed with a son, named Thato.
  • October 08: Unveiling of the tombstones of the late Lesira and MaPakiso.

2006

  • A young soldier named Thato, passed on. His passing remains a mystery to this day.
  • Feb: Tsokolo and Mannana Ntshiea got married. She is given our family name MmaLetsika.

2007

  • December: Unveiling of the tombstones of the late Leqosa.

2008

  • February: Bonakele Filita passed on. He leaves his wife, Mantieheleng and his two boys Bonakele and Simphiwe.

2009

  • September: MaLetsika was employed at Matjhabeng municipality in Welkom.

2010

  • April 26:: Pakiso aka Makhoana passed this day due to persistent stroke attacks. He leaves his wife MaLimakatso and children behind.
  • October 20: Toiso aka Toledo passed this day due to an illness. He leaves his wife MaTsepiso and son Tsepiso.
  • December 18: MaPheello passes this day. She leaves her children Mojalefa, Kgabo and MaModikoe.
  • December 26: Mantieheleng gives birth to Semangela.

2011

  • April: Tsele is blessed with a baby boy. He names him after his father Pakiso.

2012

  • March : Ntate-moholo Lingaka passed. He is buried at his home at Ha-Selomo near Butha-Buthe in Lesotho on 2nd of this Month.
